Sonographer Work Description

Lynn NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Lynn NC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Lynn NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Lynn NC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Lynn NCAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Lynn NC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Lynn home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Lynn NC ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Lynn NC area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Lynn NC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Lynn NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Lynn medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Lynn NC home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lynn NC area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Betty Lynn

Betty Lynn was born in Kansas City, Missouri,[2] Her mother, Elizabeth Ann Lynn,[3] was "an accomplished mezzo-soprano" who taught Betty to sing and started her in the Kansas City Conservatory of Music when she was 5 years old.[4]

Lynn had little personal contact with her father, who once reportedly threatened to shoot her mother in the abdomen when she was pregnant. After Lynn's birth, her mother once took shelter in a locked closet with the baby as her husband threatened the two. They divorced when Lynn was 5 years old. Lynn's grandfather, George Andrew Lynn, a railroad engineer, took on the role of father as she grew up.[4]

When she was 17, Lynn auditioned to participate in United Service Organizations entertainment. At age 18 she was part of a USO tour in the China Burma India Theater. She realized the gravity of the situation when a Marine gave her a pistol saying, "You might need this."[4]
