Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Mayodan NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Mayodan NC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Mayodan NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Mayodan NC clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Mayodan NCAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Mayodan NC outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Mayodan home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Mayodan NC ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mayodan NC area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Mayodan NC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Mayodan NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Mayodan medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Mayodan NC home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mayodan NC area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
