Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Mebane NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Mebane NC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Mebane NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Mebane NC hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in North Carolina or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Mebane NCAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Mebane NC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Mebane home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Mebane NC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Mebane NC area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Mebane NC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Mebane NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Mebane medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Mebane NC residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Mebane NC area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Rood III, was hired to create an exact replica of the painting to adorn the new facility.[11]
