Sonographer Job Description

Sharpsburg NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Sharpsburg NC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Sharpsburg NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Sharpsburg NC clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Sharpsburg NCAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Sharpsburg NC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Sharpsburg home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Sharpsburg NC area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Sharpsburg NC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Sharpsburg NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Sharpsburg medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Sharpsburg NC residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Sharpsburg NC area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
