Zebulon NC sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Zebulon NC, it’s time to start the process of choosing a college. To begin with, you must find the ideal program that will furnish the appropriate instruction to become a qualified professional. And because some states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each school so that you can evaluate and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? Most prospective students will start by searching for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost should be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training options that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Zebulon NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Zebulon NC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Zebulon NC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Zebulon NC hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Zebulon NCAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Zebulon NC outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Zebulon home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Zebulon NC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Zebulon NC area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Zebulon NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Zebulon NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Zebulon medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Zebulon NC residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Zebulon NC area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
