Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Groveport OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Groveport OH hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Groveport OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Groveport OH clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Ohio or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Groveport OHAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Groveport OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Groveport home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Groveport OH ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Groveport OH area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Groveport OH health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Groveport OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Groveport medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Groveport OH home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Groveport OH area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
