Sonographer Job Description

New Paris OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in New Paris OH clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

New Paris OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with New Paris OH clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Ohio or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in New Paris OHAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local New Paris OH outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your New Paris home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask New Paris OH ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the New Paris OH area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous New Paris OH health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have associations with New Paris OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the New Paris medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their New Paris OH residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the New Paris OH area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
