Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

South Lebanon OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in South Lebanon OH hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

South Lebanon OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with South Lebanon OH hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Ohio or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in South Lebanon OHAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local South Lebanon OH outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your South Lebanon home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask South Lebanon OH ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the South Lebanon OH area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of South Lebanon OH health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have associations with South Lebanon OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the South Lebanon medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their South Lebanon OH residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the South Lebanon OH area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
