Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Hastings OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Hastings OK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Hastings OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Hastings OK hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Oklahoma or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Hastings OKAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Hastings OK hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Hastings home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Hastings OK ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Hastings OK area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Hastings OK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Hastings OK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Hastings health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Hastings OK home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hastings OK area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

A community called Bayard existed at the site of present-day Hastings until the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Reservation was opened to new settlers on August 6, 1901. Since Indian Territory already had a post office named "Baird", the postal department named the station it established at this location. A couple of residents had suggested naming it for their hometown of Hastings, Nebraska. That was accepted by postal officials.[3]

In 1902, a railroad line called the Enid and Anadarko built tracks through Hastings. The population was 560 in 1907 and 727 in 1910. The population has declined continuously from 1910 until the present.[3]

Hastings is located in northwestern Jefferson County at 34°13′39″N 98°06′31″W / 34.2275°N 98.1086°W / 34.2275; -98.1086.[4] It is 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Waurika along Oklahoma State Highway 5 and 5 miles (8.0 km) north of the Red River.[3]
