Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Jay OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Jay OK clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Jay OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Jay OK hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Oklahoma or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Jay OKAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Jay OK hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Jay home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Jay OK ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Jay OK area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Jay OK health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Jay OK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Jay medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Jay OK home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Jay OK area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
