Prue OK sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Prue OK, it’s time to start the procedure of selecting a school. First, you need to find the ideal program that will furnish the appropriate education to become a qualified professional. And since a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s very important that you research each program so that you can evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? A number of students will begin by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and additional qualifications will be addressed more in depth later in this article. But to start with, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education options that are available.

Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Prue OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Prue OK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Prue OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Prue OK clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Oklahoma or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Prue OKAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Prue OK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Prue home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Prue OK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Prue OK area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Prue OK health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Prue OK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Prue medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Prue OK residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Prue OK area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Prue, Oklahoma

Prue is a town in southern Osage County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 465 at the 2010 census, up 7.4 percent from 433 at the 2000 census.[3] The town was named for Henry Prue, who owned the original townsite. Prue was relocated when Lake Keystone was built, and is sometimes called "New Prue".[4]

Prue was a small settlement when the Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad (later the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad, often called the MKT or"Katy ") extended its line from Wybark( near Muskogee) to Osage, Oklahoma by way of Prue in 1902–03. The Prue post office was established in September 1905, and town lots were sold at public auction beginning on March 22, 1911.[4]

Oil exploration around Prue began about 1911, and the Prue Field was opened east-northeast of town in 1920, becoming a major source of natural gas. The nearby East Osage City and Twin Creek oil fields have continued producing into the twenty-first century.[4]
