Taft OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Taft OK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Taft OK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Taft OK hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Oklahoma or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Taft OKAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Taft OK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Taft home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Taft OK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Taft OK area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Taft OK employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Taft OK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Taft healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Taft OK home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Taft OK area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
