Sonographer Job Description

Amity OR ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Amity OR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Amity OR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Amity OR clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Oregon or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Amity ORAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Amity OR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Amity home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Amity OR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Amity OR area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Amity OR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have partnerships with Amity OR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Amity medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Amity OR home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Amity OR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
