Brightwood OR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Brightwood OR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Brightwood OR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Brightwood OR hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Oregon or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Brightwood OR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Brightwood home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Brightwood OR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Brightwood OR area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Brightwood OR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Brightwood OR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Brightwood health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Brightwood OR home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Brightwood OR area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
