Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Clatskanie OR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Clatskanie OR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Clatskanie OR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Clatskanie OR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Oregon or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Clatskanie ORAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Clatskanie OR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Clatskanie home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Clatskanie OR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Clatskanie OR area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Clatskanie OR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Clatskanie OR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Clatskanie health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Clatskanie OR residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Clatskanie OR area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Clatskanie, Oregon

Clatskanie /ˈklætskɪnaɪ/ is a city in Columbia County, Oregon, United States. It was named for the Clatskanie River, which empties into the Columbia River within the city limits. The population was 1,737 at the 2010 census.

According to some reports,[who?] the original name of this town when it was platted in 1884, was Bryantville. However, the post office in this location is shown as Clatskanie as early as December 1871.

Clatskanie comes from a Native American word, Tlatskani. According to the Clatsop County pioneer Silas B. Smith, Tlatskani was a point in the Nehalem River that was reached from the Columbia River by way of the Youngs River or by way of the Clatskanie River. The native inhabitants, who were not in the habit of naming streams, did not use the word Tlatskani for the streams they would follow in order to get to that point, but the white men who settled here later did apply the name to the streams.[5]
