Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Gladstone OR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Gladstone OR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Gladstone OR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Gladstone OR hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Oregon or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Gladstone ORAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Gladstone OR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Gladstone home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Gladstone OR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Gladstone OR area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Gladstone OR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Gladstone OR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Gladstone medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Gladstone OR residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Gladstone OR area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    William Ewart Gladstone

William Ewart Gladstone FRS FSS (/ˈɡlædstən/; 29 December 1809 – 19 May 1898) was a British statesman and Liberal Party politician. In a career lasting over sixty years, he served for twelve years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four terms beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times.

Gladstone was born in Liverpool to Scottish parents. He first entered the House of Commons in 1832, beginning his political career as a High Tory, a grouping which became the Conservative Party under Robert Peel in 1834. Gladstone served as a minister in both of Peel's governments, and in 1846 joined the breakaway Peelite faction, which eventually merged into the new Liberal Party in 1859. He was Chancellor under Lord Aberdeen (1852–1855), Lord Palmerston (1859–1865) and Lord Russell (1865–1866). Gladstone's own political doctrine—which emphasised equality of opportunity, free trade, and laissez-faire economic policies—came to be known as Gladstonian liberalism. His popularity amongst the working-class earned him the sobriquet "The People's William".

In 1868, Gladstone became Prime Minister for the first time. Many reforms were passed during his first ministry, including the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland and the introduction of secret voting. After electoral defeat in 1874, Gladstone resigned as leader of the Liberal Party; but from 1876 he began a comeback based on opposition to Turkey's reaction to the Bulgarian April Uprising. His Midlothian Campaign of 1879–80 was an early example of many modern political campaigning techniques.[1][2] After the 1880 general election, Gladstone formed his second ministry (1880–1885), which saw the passage of the Third Reform Act as well as crises in Egypt (culminating in the Fall of Khartoum) and Ireland, where his government passed repressive measures but also improved the legal rights of Irish tenant farmers.
