Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Gold Hill OR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Gold Hill OR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Gold Hill OR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Gold Hill OR clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Oregon or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Gold Hill ORAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Gold Hill OR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Gold Hill home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Gold Hill OR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Gold Hill OR area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Gold Hill OR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Gold Hill OR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Gold Hill healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Gold Hill OR home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Gold Hill OR area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
