Mikkalo OR ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Mikkalo OR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure

  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance.
