Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Albion PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Albion PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Albion PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Albion PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Albion PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Albion PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Albion home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Albion PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Albion PA area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Albion PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Albion PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Albion medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Albion PA home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Albion PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
