Sonographer Work Summary

Avondale PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Avondale PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Avondale PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Avondale PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Avondale PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Avondale PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Avondale home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Avondale PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Avondale PA area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Avondale PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Avondale PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Avondale medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Avondale PA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Avondale PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
