Conyngham PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Conyngham PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Conyngham PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Conyngham PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Conyngham PAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Conyngham PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Conyngham home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Conyngham PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Conyngham PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Conyngham PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Conyngham PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Conyngham medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Conyngham PA residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Conyngham PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

The first settler of Conyngham was George Drum (in the late 1700s)[4] who served in the American Revolution and was elected justice of the peace in 1811.[5][6] George Drum was an entrepreneurial businessman and was a large landowner who also owned the Drums Hotel, a shoe shop, tavern, and the Drums Post Office. He and his family developed the adjacent village of Drums, of which the village is named after the family, along with helping the development of Conyngham. Drums is a sister village to Conyngham. The George Drum residence remains standing in impeccable condition on Conyngham's Main Street.[7]

The Sugarloaf Massacre of September 11, 1780, was one of a series of bloody engagements fought in the frontier of northeastern Pennsylvania between Iroquois (allies of British troops) and settlers loyal to the cause of American independence. Today, this event is commemorated by a historic monument with a bronze plaque bearing the names of the fifteen men who lost their lives near modern-day Conyngham.

In 1815, Redmond Conyngham represented Luzerne County in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. In 1820, he served a term in the State Senate. Captain Gustavus Conyngham was his cousin. He was an unsung hero of the Revolution. He commanded a privateer and was the first to carry the American flag in the English Channel. The townspeople suggested naming the village after Redmond Conyngham, but he replied that the town should be named in honor of his cousin, Gustavus, who frequently made trips to England to obtain military supplies for revolutionary colonists.[8]
