Corsica PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Corsica PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Corsica PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Corsica PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Corsica PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Corsica PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Corsica home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Corsica PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Corsica PA area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Corsica PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Corsica PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Corsica healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Corsica PA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Corsica PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
