Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Dresher PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Dresher PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Dresher PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Dresher PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Dresher PAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Dresher PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Dresher home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Dresher PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Dresher PA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Dresher PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Dresher PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Dresher healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Dresher PA residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Dresher PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
