Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Fawn Grove PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Fawn Grove PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Fawn Grove PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Fawn Grove PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Fawn Grove PAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Fawn Grove PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Fawn Grove home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Fawn Grove PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Fawn Grove PA area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Fawn Grove PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Fawn Grove PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Fawn Grove medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Fawn Grove PA home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Fawn Grove PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
