Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Johnsonburg PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Johnsonburg PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Johnsonburg medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Johnsonburg PA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Johnsonburg PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
