Schuylkill Haven PA sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Schuylkill Haven PA, the next step is to begin the process of choosing a school. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will furnish the necessary training to become a qualified professional. So it’s extremely important that you research each college in order to assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one begin? Most students will begin by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in depth later in this post. Sonographer Occupation Description

Schuylkill Haven PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Schuylkill Haven PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Schuylkill Haven PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Schuylkill Haven PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Schuylkill Haven PAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Schuylkill Haven PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Schuylkill Haven home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Schuylkill Haven PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Schuylkill Haven PA area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Schuylkill Haven PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Schuylkill Haven PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Schuylkill Haven medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Schuylkill Haven PA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Schuylkill Haven PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania

Schuylkill Haven is a borough in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, four miles (6 km) south of Pottsville and 89 miles (143 km) north-west of Philadelphia, in the United States. The borough's population was 5,548 as of the 2000 census. Schuylkill Haven is situated along the Schuylkill River for which it is named. Schuylkill Haven is a focal point of activity in southern Schuylkill County.

The earliest white settlers first arrived in the area in the 1730s, traveled north of the Blue Mountain at the modern Berks-Schuylkill County line at that time. The first settler in Schuylkill Haven was John Fincher, a Quaker from Chester County, Pennsylvania. Fincher received a land grant of 225 acres (0.91 km2) on March 5, 1750, the day which Schuylkill Haven considers to be its unofficial founding. Fincher constructed a house and barn near the Schuylkill River, and called his small settlement "Fincher's Ford."

The next known settler of Schuylkill Haven was Martin Dreibelbis, a German who arrived in the Spring of 1775. Martin Dreibelbis constructed a house, saw mill, distillery, and a grist mill on the eastern bank of the Schuylkill River. He later built a log house near modern-day Main Street, giving Martin Dreibelbis the title of the first citizen of Schuylkill Haven. Martin Dreibelbis willed the original plot of the town to a son, Jacob. Another son, Daniel, received an area east of the original plot, and a third son, George, received an area outside of the present borough known as "Seven Stars" (located north of Schuylkill Haven on the Schuylkill River). The original plot of Schuylkill Haven shows that the borough stretched from the Schuylkill River on the west, to present-day Main Street on the north (then known as Front Street), to Saint Peter Street on the east (then known as Jacob Street), and Liberty Street on the south. Present-day Columbia Street was the main residential district.[3]
