Sonographer Occupation Description

Van Voorhis PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Van Voorhis PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

student attending online sonography class in Van Voorhis PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Van Voorhis PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Van Voorhis PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Van Voorhis PA area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Van Voorhis PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Van Voorhis PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Van Voorhis medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Van Voorhis PA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Van Voorhis PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
