Sonographer Occupation Summary

Willow Street PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Willow Street PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Willow Street PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Willow Street PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Willow Street PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Willow Street PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Willow Street home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Willow Street PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Willow Street PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Willow Street PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Willow Street PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Willow Street medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Willow Street PA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Willow Street PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
