Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Woodbury PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Woodbury PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Woodbury PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Woodbury PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Woodbury PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Woodbury PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Woodbury home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Woodbury PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Woodbury PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Woodbury PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Woodbury PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Woodbury medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Woodbury PA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Woodbury PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
