One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Ashaway RI area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Ashaway RI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Ashaway RI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Ashaway health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Rhode Island healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Ashaway RI home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ashaway RI area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
