Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Johnston SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Johnston SC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Johnston SC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Johnston SC clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in South Carolina or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Johnston SCAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Johnston SC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Johnston home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Johnston SC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Johnston SC area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Johnston SC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Johnston SC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Johnston healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Johnston SC home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Johnston SC area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Johnston, South Carolina

Johnston is a town in Edgefield County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census.[3] It is part of the Augusta, Georgia, metropolitan area. The town's official welcome sign states that it is "Peach Capital of the World".

Johnston is called The Hub of the Ridge because it is located at the meeting place of the three river systems which flow away from the Ridge, a fertile plateau about 30 miles (48 km) long between clay hills to the north and sand hills to the south. The area has been settled since the mid-1700s. In 1791 as George Washington traveled through the area on his triumphal tour through the country, he stopped at the Lott family plantation, just east of Johnston.

In the late 1860s, the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad expanded westward from Columbia to Augusta. Edward Jones Mims, M.D., persuaded William Johnston, president of the railroad, to run the railroad through the 1,200-acre (490 ha) Mims plantation. In return, Dr. Mims agreed to name the new town for Mr. Johnston.
