Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Little River SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Little River SC clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Little River SC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Little River SC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in South Carolina or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Little River SCAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Little River SC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Little River home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Little River SC ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Little River SC area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Little River SC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have associations with Little River SC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Little River medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Little River SC home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Little River SC area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
