Sonographer Occupation Summary

Mayo SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Mayo SC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Mayo SC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Mayo SC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in South Carolina or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Mayo SCAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Mayo SC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Mayo home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Mayo SC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Mayo SC area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Mayo SC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Mayo SC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Mayo medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Mayo SC residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mayo SC area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
