Sonographer Occupation Description

Pamplico SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Pamplico SC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Pamplico SC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Pamplico SC hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in South Carolina or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Pamplico SCAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Pamplico SC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Pamplico home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any sonography program you are looking at, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Pamplico SC ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Pamplico SC area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Pamplico SC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Pamplico SC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Pamplico health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Pamplico SC residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Pamplico SC area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
