Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Thor SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Thor SC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Thor SC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Thor SC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in South Carolina or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Thor SCAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Thor SC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Thor home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Thor SC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Thor SC area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Thor SC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Thor SC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Thor medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Thor SC residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Thor SC area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
