Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Canistota SD ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Canistota SD clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Canistota SD ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Canistota SD hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in South Dakota or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Canistota SDAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Canistota SD hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Canistota home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Canistota SD ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Canistota SD area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Canistota SD health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Canistota SD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Canistota medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Canistota SD residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Canistota SD area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
