Sonographer Job Description

Labolt SD ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Labolt SD clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Labolt SD ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Labolt SD clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in South Dakota or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Labolt SDAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Labolt SD outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Labolt home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Labolt SD ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Labolt SD area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Labolt SD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Labolt SD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Labolt medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Labolt SD residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Labolt SD area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
