Sonogram Tech Work Description

Wakonda SD ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Wakonda SD hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Wakonda SD ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Wakonda SD hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in South Dakota or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Wakonda SDAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Wakonda SD hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Wakonda home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Wakonda SD ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Wakonda SD area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Wakonda SD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have associations with Wakonda SD clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Wakonda healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Wakonda SD home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Wakonda SD area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
