Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Centerville TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Centerville TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Centerville TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Centerville TN hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Centerville TNAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Centerville TN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Centerville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Centerville TN ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Centerville TN area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Centerville TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Centerville TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Centerville medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Centerville TN home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Centerville TN area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
