Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Coalmont TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Coalmont TN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Coalmont TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Coalmont TN clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Coalmont TNAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Coalmont TN hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Coalmont home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Coalmont TN ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Coalmont TN area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Coalmont TN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Coalmont TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Coalmont healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Coalmont TN residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Coalmont TN area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
