Gadsden TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Gadsden TN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Gadsden TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Gadsden TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Gadsden TNAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Gadsden TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Gadsden home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Gadsden TN ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Gadsden TN area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Gadsden TN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Gadsden TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Gadsden medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Gadsden TN residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Gadsden TN area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
