Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Rogersville TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Rogersville TN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Rogersville TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Rogersville TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Rogersville TNAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Rogersville TN hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Rogersville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Rogersville TN ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Rogersville TN area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Rogersville TN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Rogersville TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Rogersville healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Rogersville TN home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Rogersville TN area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
