Sonographer Occupation Summary

Troy TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Troy TN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Troy TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Troy TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Tennessee or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Troy TNAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Troy TN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Troy home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Troy TN ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Troy TN area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Troy TN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Troy TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Troy health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Troy TN home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Troy TN area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
