Sonographer Occupation Summary

Bridgeport TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Bridgeport TX hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Bridgeport TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Bridgeport TX clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Texas or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Bridgeport TXAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bridgeport TX outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Bridgeport home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Bridgeport TX ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bridgeport TX area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Bridgeport TX health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Bridgeport TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Bridgeport healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Bridgeport TX home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bridgeport TX area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
