Sonographer Job Description

Crandall TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Crandall TX clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Crandall TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Crandall TX clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Texas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Crandall TXAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Crandall TX outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Crandall home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Crandall TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Crandall TX area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Crandall TX health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Crandall TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Crandall health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Crandall TX home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Crandall TX area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
