Sonographer Occupation Summary

D Hanis TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in D Hanis TX clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

D Hanis TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through D Hanis TX hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Texas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in D Hanis TXAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local D Hanis TX hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your D Hanis home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask D Hanis TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the D Hanis TX area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of D Hanis TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with D Hanis TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the D Hanis medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their D Hanis TX residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the D Hanis TX area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
