To begin with, you have to find the ideal program that will furnish the necessary instruction to become a qualified professional. And given that a number of states do require that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each college so that you can assess and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? Many students will begin by looking for schools that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location must be considered when making a decision, but there are other important factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and other qualifications will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training programs that are offered.

Sonographer Occupation Description

Eagle Lake TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Eagle Lake TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Eagle Lake TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Eagle Lake TX hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Texas or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Eagle Lake TXAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Eagle Lake TX hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Eagle Lake home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Eagle Lake TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Eagle Lake TX area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Eagle Lake TX health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Eagle Lake TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Eagle Lake health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Eagle Lake TX residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Eagle Lake TX area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
