Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Elmendorf TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Elmendorf TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Elmendorf TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Elmendorf TX clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Texas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Elmendorf TXAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Elmendorf TX hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Elmendorf home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Elmendorf TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Elmendorf TX area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Elmendorf TX health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Elmendorf TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Elmendorf medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Elmendorf TX residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Elmendorf TX area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
