Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Inez TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Inez TX clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Inez TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Inez TX hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Texas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Inez TXAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Inez TX outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Inez home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Inez TX ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Inez TX area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Inez TX health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Inez TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Inez medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Inez TX home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Inez TX area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
