Sonographer Job Description

Paige TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Paige TX hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Paige TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Paige TX clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Texas or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Paige TXAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Paige TX hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Paige home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Paige TX ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Paige TX area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Paige TX employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Paige TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Paige healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Paige TX home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Paige TX area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
